“Protection” tab on Thinfinity Remote Desktop

In Thinfinity Remote Desktop 5.0, you’ll find a new tab on the Server Manager called “Protection”. This tab provides the capability of detecting brute force attacks and how it responds to them. This feature works by blocking login in the landing page of Remote Desktop after a number of failed attempts (3 by default). Please note that this feature is disabled by default.
In order to enable it you will have to check the “Enable brute force detection” option.

Now you are able to add IPs to both the White and Black lists, as well as force a maximum on login attempts and the time it takes for said login to be unblocked.

Securing your Remote Desktop environment by using Windows Group Policies

In this quick article, we’ll show you how to secure your current Thinfinity Remote Desktop environment by using Windows Group Policies to restrict and limit the usage of your users to only what’s necessary.

Group Policy are a series of settings in the Windows registry that concern security and other operational behaviors.

Group Policy lets you prevent users from accessing parts of the system, run specific scripts when the system starts up or shuts down, and forces a particular home page to open for every user in the network. All this being said, let’s start with this tutorial.

First of all, you’ll need to create a GPO.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for MMC and click the first result to open the Microsoft Management Console.
  3. Click the File menu.
  4. Select the Add/Remove Snap-in option.

  1. Under the “Available snaps-ins” section, select the Group Policy Object Editor snap-in.
  2. Click the Add button.

  1. Click the Browse button.

  1. Click the Users tab.
  2. Select the user or group you want to apply a specific set of policies.

  1. Click the OK button.
  2. Click the Finish button.
  3. Click OK again.
  4. And now let’s save the changes we did by clicking in the File menu.
  5. Select the Save As option.

  1. Now let’s confirm a name for the snap-in.
  2. Select a location to store the console.
  3. Click the Save button.

Once you complete these steps, you can use the new console to set custom policies that will only apply to that specific user or group of users, and that’s what we are going to do. 
If you now open the saved file, you’ll be prompted with all the group policies that are available, so from here we should be able to start restricting the user experience.

After this final step, we are ready to start restricting a user or even a group of users using Windows Group Policies.

 


 

Restrict access to the Command Prompt

The command prompt is very useful for system administrators, but in the wrong hands, it can turn into a nightmare because it gives users the opportunity to run commands that could harm your network. Therefore, it’s best to disable it for regular users. You can do that by using the “Prevent access to the command prompt” policy. 
You’ll be able to find this policy under -User configuration/Administrative Templates/System- If you enable this policy, the affected user or group of users won’t be able to load Windows command prompt.

Disable Windows Control Panel

Control Panel restrictions are vital for business networks and school environments. If you want to prevent end-users from changing settings, this is a good step to take.
You’ll be able to find this policy under -Administrative Templates/Control Panel- and then enable ‘Prohibit Access to Control Panel and PC settings’.

Hide Specified Drives in ‘My Computer’

With Windows Policies, you can also restrict access to any drives. In this case, we are going to disable access to all drives, but you can as well restrict only one drive (the C:// drive for example)

You can find this policy under – User configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/File Explorer – and then search for the ‘Hide these specified drives in My Computer’ option and enable that. Once you enable that option, you’ll be able to restrict which drives you want to restrict.

Disable “add or remove programs”

Disable the ability to add or remove programs is definitely on our list. Imagine giving the end-user the ability to add or remove programs at will… You can imagine the downsized on that. So let’s review how to easily disable this option.

In this case, you can find this policy under – User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs – And enable the policy called ‘Remove Add or Remove Programs’.

Remove ‘Run’ from the start menu

The run dialog is one of the oldest Windows features and allows users to manually execute any application or script by calling the full path of the .exe or script you want to call. Disabling the Run button in the start menu is often done as a prevention from users running unauthorized software or batch scripts.

You can find this policy under – User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Start Menu and Taskbar – and now enable the policy called ‘Remove Run menu from Start Menu’.

Remove access to Windows Task Manager

The Windows Task Manager is an advanced feature that gives you access to tools to start and stop applications, monitor system performance, running apps and servers and much more. Although it is a handy tool, sometimes you may want to disable access to prevent users from restarting specific programs, changing processes priorities, or because you need to comply with your organization’s policies. In any case, we have the solution for you.

You can find this GPO under – User Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Ctrl+Alt+Del Options – Here you can find a policy called ‘Remove Task Manager’ If you enable this setting, your end-users won’t be able to load the task manager.

Disable access to the Windows Registry

Improper changes to the Windows Registry may make your computer run abnormally or prevent it from booting properly. Definitely messing around in the Windows Registry can cause all kinds of problems if you’re not careful. So this is an important policy to disable. You can find this policy under – User Configuration/Administrative Templates/System – Under this section you’ll find the policy called ‘Prevent access to registry editing tools’ If you enable this setting, users won’t be able to load Windows Registry by searching for the regedit.msc reference.

Prevent running specific Windows applications

This is by far one of the most useful policies for a Windows Administrator. A computer used by multiple users will always require some restrictions for better use. Some applications may not be suitable for some group of users, or you may not want to share with other users. In certain situations, you might want to restrict some of the programs on your computer. The reason can be privacy-related for the users or to be safe from issues caused by misuse of the programs.

To disable this policy, go to – User Configuration/Administrative Templates/System – Here you can find the policy called ‘Don’t run specified Windows applications’ In this case, you just need to enable the policy and open the list of disallowed applications and start typing the .exe you want to disallow. As you can see, in this case, we have disabled the use of Powershell and Powershell_ISE applications.

Remove and prevent access to the Shut Down, Restart, Sleep and Hibernate commands

Some personal computers or servers should be running all the time for specific tasks. Servers are commonly used to deliver services that are constantly required, which is why they are never turned off. Similarly, some personal computers will be running certain processes that take a long time and the computer should be running for it.

However, someone can accidentally click on one of the power options which results in terminating the processes on your system. If used by multiple users, then another user can also use the power option without knowing that it should be running.

In this case, you can find this policy under – User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Start Menu and Taskbar – In this section, you’ll find a policy called ‘Remove and prevent access to the Shut-Down, Restart, Sleep and Hibernate commands’ and if you enable this policy, end-users won’t be able to Shut Down, Restart, Sleep or Hibernate your servers.

Bidirectional Audio Redirection on Thinfinity® Remote Desktop 6.0

In the 6.0 version of Thinfinity® Remote Desktop, you will find a completely revamped Web Profile Manager, in which you’ll be able to configure all aspects of your Access Profiles from within the browser itself, one of the newest features is the Bidirectional Audio Redirection.

This feature enables audio and microphone forwarding from your remote RDP desktop to your local computer. This allows Thinfinity to support softphones installed on the remote computer, desktop or web applications that require microphone and audio redirection.  You can even make Teams or Zoom audio calls.

To enable remote sound redirection, follow  these steps:

  • Firstly, open the Group Policy Editor by going to Start > Run > gpedit
  • Go to “Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Remote Desktop Services/Remote Desktop Session Host\Device and Resource Redirection”
  • There you’ll find the option “Allow audio and video playback redirection:

  • Double-click on it and check the Enabled option, then hit Apply and OK on the next window:
  • Open a Command Prompt window as an administrator and type “gpupdate /force” to apply the policy changes:You
  • are now able to open the Thinfinity Remote Desktop landing page and edit a connection, by clicking on the pencil icon at the top-right of the access profile icon:On the Web Profile Manager, go to
  • the Resources tab, where you can check the “Enable Remote Sound” option:
  • Please note that you should have permissions for both sound and microphone, enabled on your browser for the audio redirection feature to work:

How to create Labels with the Web Profile Manager for Thinfinity® Remote Desktop

With Thinfinity® Remote Desktop 6.0 you are able to organize your connections using Labels, completely within the Thinfinity® Remote Desktop index page using the new Web Profile Manager.

You can browse these Labels with a Tree View, which allows you to set up Labels that work like folders and subfolders to make it easier to navigate multiple connections on your index page:

The Tree View can be opened by clicking on the arrow sign button on the middle left part of the index page:

Once you click it, the Tree View will be displayed:

Clicking on each folder will display the available connections assigned to them:

On this guide, you’ll find the steps to create Labels here:

  • Click on New on the Index page and select “Label” as an Access Type:

  • Enter a name for that particular Label:

  • Edit an existing Profile by clicking on the pen right above it, and click on Select on the Labels section to point to the Label you’ve just created:

You can create Sub Labels within existing Labels using the same procedure, allowing you to organize your Web Profiles as you see fit.

How to enable H264 for Thinfinity Remote Desktop

In this document, we are going to show you How to enable H264, a new feature for Thinfinity Remote Desktop 6.0.

H.264 is a video compression standard. It is by far the most commonly used format for recording, compression, and distribution of video content. The intent of the H.264 was to create a standard capable of providing good video quality at substantially lower bit rates than previous standards, without increasing the complexity of design so much that it would be impractical or excessively expensive to implement.

In order for Thinfinity to work in conjunction with H264, this setting has to be enabled on the Remote Host you wish to connect to. This article will guide you through the process on how to easily accomplish this in just a few steps:

Let’s start by installing Thinfinity Remote Desktop. Once this is complete, open the registry editor by typing “regedit” on the start menu and navigate to:

“HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cybele Software\Thinfinity\Remote Desktop Server” 

And add the following key (DWORD) “EnableH264”.

After you create it, click right and select “Edit”, in here edit the value data, and set it to “1”

Open the Local Group policy editor: click Start, then type Local Group policy editor . Once on the Group policy editor, navigate to this path:

 “Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Remote Desktop Session Environment”

You will have to enable these three policies:

Prioritize H.264/AVC 444 graphic mode for Remote Desktop Connections

Configure H.264/AVC hardware encoding for Remote Desktop Connections

Use hardware graphics adapters for all remote desktop sessions”

Click right and select “Edit”

And then select “Enable”

Press “OK” then “Apply”.

Now open a command prompt window by typing “CMD” in the Start menu, and then run: gpupdate /force

Now you can open Thinfinity Remote Desktop, edit your profile, and go to the tab “ Experience”. On this tab you can mark the option “H264”, press “OK”, “Apply” and “Save”.

This is How to create a new connection with the Web Profile Manager of Thinfinity® Remote Desktop

With the 6.0 version of Thinfinity® Remote Desktop, you will find a completely revamped Web Profile Manager, in which you’ll be able to configure all aspects of your Access Profiles from within the browser itself.

In here, you’ll find the steps to create a new connection:

  • By default, the option to create new connections on the Thinfinity® landing page, is enabled and visible. This is seen as a “[+]” on the Thinfinity® Remote Desktop Manager, on the Access Profiles tab, like so:

  • With the New button activated, you will be able to see if on the Thinfinity® Remote Desktop landing page:

  • After clicking on the button “New” , you’ll see the revamped New Access window that allows you to choose from all the Access types of profiles that Thinfinity® has to offer. Those being Remote Desktop, VNC/RFB, a Terminal connection, Web Link and Web VPN. You also have the Label feature that allows you to create subfolders to better organize your Thinfinity® landing page:

Another feature new to the Thinfinity® Remote Desktop 6.0 is the ability to edit existing profiles in all aspects, same as on the client application. To be able to modify an existing connection, you would only need to click on the Edit button in the form of a pen, above the profile icon:

And lastly, you can also modify the credentials used for existing creations by clicking on the key icon above the profile icon:

Admins can now make configuration changes on the fly using their web browser from any internet connected device as well, just like the users they need to manage.  From your HTML5 browser, you are taken to the Thinfinity landing page, where you can create any of the following profiles:

  • Remote Desktop
  • VNC/RFB
  • Terminal Connection
  • Web Link
  • Web VPN

Think of the new Web Manager as a single pane of glass that gives you visibility and the ability to configure all Thinfinity  profile settings from a single portal.  Essentially, any profile setting that can be configured on our desktop client can now be configured through the Web Manager.  For instance, you can define the access hours for your users, specifying the exact time windows that users can connect.  Other settings now available include the following:

  • Configure the image quality, color depth and desktop resolution
  • Enable and configure printing, remote sound and clipboard capabilities
